Pre Only Fools And Horses career[]

Born on the 16th August 1942 in Bristol, of Suffolk ancestry on his father's side. John Challis appeared in an episode of Open All Hours in 1976 as a bread man. The series starred future Only Fools and Horses co-star David Jason as Granville, who Challis shared a scene with.

Only Fools And Horses[]

John Challis first appeared as Boycie in the first series of the show. Although recurring at first, he began to develop into one of the show's main characters as the series went on and lasted until the final episode in 2003 "Sleepless in Peckham".

Challis returned to the role of Boycie in the sequel spin-off series The Green Green Grass, which aired from 2005 to 2009. He would reprise the role of Boycie again for two short promotional videos celebrating Only Fools and Horses 30th anniversary in 2011, and then for an online web video for Del Boy's tie in book Who Dares Wins. In 2019 he began to attend Only Fools and Horses related events, occasionally acting in-character as Boycie.

Other TV roles[]

He appeared in the ITV comedy series Benidorm as Monty Staines from 2015 until the shows conclusion in 2018. Following the conclusion of the series Challis admitted that work dried up due to being typecast, and decided to concentrate on writing in-between jobs.
